AGROTOURISM MEETS WINE MAKING

Stokelan is a small family owned boutique winery that draws its inspiration from New Jersey’s rich farming history. We focus on producing high quality vinifera, honoring local agricultural traditions. All our operations, from picking grapes to crushing and pouring, are intimate and hands-on.

Our mission is to provide exemplary wines and open our home to you, your family, and friends. Whatever the occasion is, we will make it a special one.

The historic Stokelan home, circa 1853, is part of the rich cultural heritage of the Medford region. We planted our vines in 2019, opened our doors in 2022, and have been creating a selection of handcrafted wines on-site ever since.

Meet the Owners

A JOURNEY OF COINCIDENCES

When Deepa first set foot on the property she could sense something special about the land.

The Stokes name is widely known in Medford, New Jersey, as they were a large agricultural family. However, you may be surprised to learn it is perhaps an even more famous name in Simla, a beautiful town in the foothills of the Himalayas. One of the Stokes, a Quaker missionary, is the American who brought the apple to Simla and eventually to the rest of India. Deepa could not believe this incredible coincidence, when she learned of it: Samuel Stokes was the link between her old hometown and Stokelan.

This is a very special connection for the Lal family; the mutual history represents the beauty of being part of one globally connected family. This is how Stokelan Winery was born. It is in Deepa’s memory that Stokelan continues.

Stokelan is supported by a family team that includes Deepa’s husband Jay, son Prashant, daughter-in-law Saira, and their two beloved and energetic grand-daughters Myra and Anya. Our passionate and dedicated staff are also part of our extended family.

The Historic Stokelan Estate

A brief history of stokelan, Circa 1853

Located right around the corner of Kirby’s Mill, another historic monument of Medford NJ, Stokelan Estate Winery was established in 2019 and officially opened in 2022. The establishment of the winery is an exciting new addition to the area; however, it is only the latest chapter in the long history of Stokelan and its surrounding farmland.

In 1691 Thomas Evans purchased 400 acres of land in what was then West Jersey. Later, in 1721, the land was sold to Joseph Stokes. It remained in the Stokes family and eventually Joseph Stokes inherited the land in 1847 and built Stokelan in 1853. Joseph Stokes was a bachelor and died at the age of 61 in 1866. In his will, the property descended to his nephew Joshua Wills. Joseph’s sister, Lydia Stokes Wills, is seen living at Stokelan on the 1860 and 1870 census records. It was Lydia’s daughter that first named the property Stokelan.

Later, Joshua Wills and his family occupied the house and undertook major renovations and improvements, including the addition of a bathroom- one of the first in the area. The home also featured an ice house, a necessity in the days before electricity and refrigeration. In 1910, Joshua and Rebecca Wills sold Stokelan for $10,000 to their nephew, Ezra Evans. Ezra occupied the home with his wife and daughters.

At that time, Medford was home to dozens of dairy farms- Stokelan included. A news story in the Camden Daily Courier from 1921 reveals that Stokelan was one of the largest dairy farms in the area. The article also reported on a fire at the farm in which 4 horses and several head of cattle perished, and the barn and outbuildings were destroyed. Fortunately, no lives were lost and the main houses escaped damage. Although no longer standing today, the barn was rebuilt in 1922 and the dairy farm at Stokelan continued in operation through the middle of the 20th century. Stokelan has remained a residential home up until 2019, when the vines were planted and this new chapter as a winery began.
